Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She founded Feminist Frequency which is a website which features video and posts on the representations of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit site for education that investigates gender representation in popular culture narratives - is created and is directed by Sarkeesian. Alongside working to highlight the problems surrounding the harassment and targeted assaults on women and other minorities in online spaces she is dedicated to breaking down stereotypes that are associated with pop culture. Sarkeesian has a degree in political thought and social theory at York University. She is also a highly-respected public presenter. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age Sarkeesian was captivated with gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. The ambitious lady planned to create a web series examining gender representation in video games and ended up being the victim of an online harassment campaign. The incident did not deter her, rather it strengthened her determination as feminist media critic. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards for her contribution to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit examines how women are depicted in contemporary pop culture.
